For millions of people with dog allergies, loving dogs has always come with a frustrating catch: getting close to one can mean sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or worse.
A pair of beagles named Bailey and Alfie may offer a glimpse of a very different future.
Scientists at Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR gene-editing technology to prevent the dogs from producing Can f 1, a protein responsible for many human allergic reactions to dogs. Bailey and Alfie were born in 2024 and, according to the company’s research, appear to be growing and developing normally.
It is an impressive scientific milestone. But before anyone starts searching for a gene-edited puppy breeder, there is a lot more to understand.
“Hypoallergenic” Has Never Meant Allergy-Free
Poodles, doodles, and other low-shedding dogs are frequently described as hypoallergenic. That can be misleading.
Dog allergies are not simply caused by fur (or by how much fur ends up decorating the furniture). People generally react to proteins found in a dog’s saliva, dander, and other biological material. A dog that sheds less may spread fewer allergens around a home, but it can still produce the proteins responsible for an allergic reaction.
That also explains why one person may comfortably live with a particular dog while reacting strongly to another, even when the dogs are the same breed.
Bailey and Alfie are different because researchers did not attempt to reduce shedding. They targeted one of the primary allergy-causing proteins at its genetic source.
In other words, this is not a new coat type. It is a change to the dog’s DNA.

How Did Scientists Do It?
The researchers used CRISPR, a technology that allows scientists to make targeted changes to genetic material.
They disabled the gene responsible for producing Can f 1 and then used cloning techniques to produce the two beagles. Testing reportedly found that neither dog produced the targeted protein.
For geneticist Matt Walker, who helped establish Kindred Companion Sciences, the result was also personal. Walker has dog allergies but has reportedly been able to live and interact closely with Bailey without experiencing his usual symptoms.
That is encouraging, but one successful human-dog pairing is not enough to tell us how every person with dog allergies would respond.
Can f 1 may be a major allergen, but it is not the only dog allergen. People can react to different proteins, which means removing Can f 1 would not necessarily make a dog allergy-free for everyone.
Don’t Expect Gene-Edited Puppies Anytime Soon
This research is still in its earliest stages.
Scientists will need to monitor Bailey and Alfie over time to determine whether the genetic change has any effect on their long-term health. More research will also be needed to understand how reliably the process works, whether the results extend to other breeds, and how people with different allergy profiles respond.
Then there are the practical questions.
Can this be done safely and consistently? Could it eventually be achieved through breeding rather than cloning? How much would these dogs cost? Who would have access to them? And which safeguards would be needed to keep animal welfare ahead of commercial demand?
Those questions do not have simple answers, and “the puppies are adorable” is not a substitute for finding them.
What Could This Mean for Pet Professionals?
Trainers, behavior consultants, veterinarians, groomers, and other pet professionals may eventually hear more clients asking about gene-edited dogs.
For now, the most responsible answer is that the research is promising but preliminary. These dogs are not yet a broadly tested or commercially available solution for people with pet allergies.
The development also raises larger questions for the pet-care community.
If allergy-friendly dogs eventually become available, they could make dog ownership possible for people who have never been able to safely share a home with one. They could potentially expand access to service dogs and other working dogs, too.
At the same time, pet professionals will need to watch for exaggerated claims, questionable breeding practices, and the possibility that demand for genetically altered dogs could further reduce interest in animals waiting in shelters and rescues.
New technology does not remove our responsibility to consider the dog in front of us.
A Fascinating Step, Not a Finished Solution
Bailey and Alfie represent something genuinely new: dogs that appear healthy while lacking one of the primary proteins associated with human dog allergies.
That deserves attention. It also deserves patience.
The history of the pet industry is filled with ideas that moved from “interesting” to “available everywhere” faster than the evidence supporting them. Responsible innovation requires more than proving that something can be done. It requires determining whether it can be done safely, ethically, and in a way that improves life for both people and animals.
For now, gene-edited hypoallergenic dogs remain a possibility rather than a product.
But for people who have spent their lives admiring dogs from a sneeze-safe distance, that possibility is still a pretty remarkable one.
