How to configure and use taxes

In this article

Learn how to collect tax on what you sell through Fetch. This article covers turning tax on, choosing the tax types for your country and their rates, marking invoice items and bookings as taxable, the per-invoice switch, and tax id numbers on invoices.

Fetch can add tax to an invoice, a group sign-up, a scheduler booking or a stay. You set it up once in your business settings, then decide item by item what is taxable. Everything here needs Stripe connected, because Stripe does the charging.

Turn tax on

  • Click your avatar, choose Settings, then Business Details.
  • Find the Tax Settings card and turn its switch on.
  • Open “Choose which taxes you want to show by default”. Tick each tax type you charge and type its rate in the Rate (%) box.

The tax types depend on the country on your account:

  • United States: State Tax and Local Tax.
  • Canada: GST, PST and HST.
  • Australia: GST.
  • United Kingdom: VAT.

Other countries have no tax types yet. Write to [email protected] if yours is missing.

If you do not see the Tax Settings card at all, Stripe is not connected. Connect it first under Settings, Integrations.

Make an invoice item taxable

Invoice items live under the Billing icon in the top bar, on the Invoice Items tab. Open one, or add a new one, and turn on Taxable product. The list then shows Taxable on that item. Only taxable items collect tax on an invoice.

Invoices

A new invoice applies your default taxes to its taxable items. Each tax is its own line, such as “8% State Tax”. To send an invoice without tax, open Additional Options when you create it, or the Tax section while it is still a draft, and untick Apply tax.

Group sessions, schedulers and stays

  • Group session. Open the group, then its Booking panel. Under Collect Payment choose Accept payments with Stripe and tick Apply tax to this booking.
  • Scheduler. Open the scheduler, then its Booking tab. Same switch.
  • Session types, packages and subscriptions. Each has its own tax switch where its price is set, under Settings, Service Options.
  • Stays. The tax switch is on each stay service, with a Taxable switch on each add-on.

The client sees the tax on the booking page before paying: the price, then “+ 8% tax”, and the total.

Tax id numbers on invoices

Some countries expect your tax registration number on every invoice. With Tax Settings on, a second card, Tax ID Numbers, appears underneath. Add a number, and Stripe checks it. Turn on Show on any number you want printed on your invoices and credit notes.

  • The types match your country. United States: EIN. Canada: BN, GST/HST and the provincial numbers. Australia: ABN and ARN. United Kingdom: UK VAT. European countries: EU VAT, and for some a national number too.
  • A Canadian GST/HST number is the full program account, like 123456789RT0001. The nine digits alone are rejected.
  • Stripe checks some numbers against the government register. If your business name in Fetch is not the registered name, a correct number can still fail.
  • Editing a number makes a new one in Stripe. It is checked again.

FAQs

Two likely reasons. The items on it are not marked Taxable product. Or Apply tax was unticked on that invoice. Check the item first.

Yes. Tick more than one tax type in Tax Settings. Each one becomes its own line on the invoice.

No. Invoices that already went out do not change. New invoices get your default taxes.

Fetch only has tax types for the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom today. Write to [email protected] and say which tax you charge.
